570. Charles Dickens - A Child's History Of England

I thought I would read some Dickens, partly because Susan Hill (568) likes him, and chose this as I don’t like the novels.

Dickens does write good, readable prose. This, oddly, covered England from Alfred the Great (900 AD) to James II (1688), with a quick flick through subsequent royalty in the final chapter. It really is old fashioned history, going through monarchs chronologically and focussing almost entirely on plots and intrigue, with no apparent interest in trends or event development. But it is ‘A Child’s History’.

Quite hard work really; maybe a useful romp through the (many) bits I had forgotten. Odd choice for late January.
