Not sure that I have ever read any Edna O’Brien before, if so a long time ago.
Although set in rural, agricultural Ireland in (I am guessing the 1950’s) this reminded me quite a lot of the ‘Angry Young Men’ school of 1950’s English fiction, I guess people in that period trying to escape the trammels and post- Victorian, post war society and discover the liberties that we now almost take for granted.
In this book, it is rural Irish teenagers trying to escape parent and Catholicism to discover boys, men and sex. Plus ca change.
