I loved this; she said she likes to write about people on the periphery of major events so here we have a WW1 novel set in Zennor, just outside St Ives and also featuring DH Lawrence and Frieda (who I didn’t know was a von Richtofthausen (?sp).
The local families are also divided amongst religious grounds between Catholicism and followers of John Wesley. The local girls are distraught as the boys are dragged off to war; DHL vehemently anti war and married to a German doesn’t enhance his popularity with the locals.
Clare Coyne has her only fuck with her lover, a bright local boy who is sent off for officer training but is so traumatised by events in France that he shoots himself at the OTC. DHL is suspected of being the father and he and Freida are hounded out of the village.
But that is just a plot synopsis; it is a very good book.
