548. Patrick Gale - Rough Music

Tried to read this (I think again) in the summer but without success.

I don’t know what the name changes of the son and daughter are supposed to achieve, as it confused and put me off. Same family, 2 parallel holidays 20/30 years apart in the same Cornish cottage.

The son, who begins in childhood as Julian but ends up (and begins the book) as Will is having an affair with his brother in law, married to the sister whose name also changes.

Meanwhile the parents who have had a tumultuous emotional life are present on both holidays and it is really the story of the emotional lives of these four people.

It is extremely good and challenging but the shifting identities didn’t help me at all!
