What a contrast to Joanna Trollope. The 2nd book in what I hope will become the Manon series, about a policewoman in Huntingdon. (488 was the first).
The plot picks up, initially it appears slightly improbably, some minor themes from 488 and gives them a brilliant turn, particularly Manon’s adoptive black son Fly and his struggle to integrate from London into polite middle class Cambridgeshire.
Manon, aged 42, has decided, slightly improbably to use AI rather than a man to become pregnant and the book is very funny and clever about pregnancy, childcare, combined with full time work.
Manon’s sister, a minor character in 488 has an important role here and there is a wonderful East End character called Birdie who is instrumental to the plot.
Brilliant, must re-read 488 and have bought her first book to take on holiday.
