This (which I have also read before) is as good as 457, although with only 2 plot lines.

This takes precedence toward the end as the solution of the murder of the final surviving quin is only hinted at; he tells Lacoste and the Three Pines characters what he thinks in a letter which is read out by Myrna while they are all hiding from the shoot out.
Meanwhile the vile Froncouer character is killed in a struggle with Gamache, and Beauvoir climbs out of his drug induced disloyalty to shoot Gamache as an extreme act of loyalty.
