443. Eric Ambler - The Light Of Day

The 2nd of the above books. I hugely enjoyed this for the 1st 80%, but the final element of the plot was very disappointing.

The hapless Arthur Simpson is a low grade Anglo Egyptian living in Athens in the late 1950’s who mixes a bit of taxi driving with ‘publishing’ ( low grade pornography), and low grade fraud.

One of his targets catches him out and blackmails him into driving a Lincoln Continental car to Istanbul, but he is caught at the border with an out of date passport. He is then blackmailed by the Turkish police into tracking the car (which is full of guns and other military stuff) into Istanbul to find out the intention of the blackmailer.

So far so good and very well written. The ending is however very disappointing; a very spoof filmic robbery of an Istanbul museum, and I lost the plot as it ended. But up to then very good.
