440 - John Burdett - Bangkok Tattoo

Never hear of this guy, but found him on a ‘Best Crime Thriller’ website.

Opaque, at least to me; an English lawyer, he has written a series of novels based in Bangkok of whom the hero is Sonchai Jitpleecheep, a Buddhist detective whose mother runs a brothel and whose boss is hugely corrupt policeman. Although he knows a lot about Buddhism (and may be a Buddhist), it is a very cynical book, but perhaps Buddhism is cynical by Western standards.

He also writes with great intelligence (it seems to me) about the logic of Thai prostitution; if the girls weren’t being paid by tired bored Westerners for sex, they’d be having a do it for nothing in the poverty ridden farmland from which they originate. They fuck quite literally and unashamedly as an escape for ruralism to urbanism and for the money.

The plot is fiendishly complicated, involving the CIA, al Qaeda, Far Eastern Geopolitics and ultimately the theft of beautifully tattooed (human body) skins.

Why has nobody heard of this guy?
