A follow on from Lucky Jim. Interesting these post-war working class boys (if the authors really were) who are interested in different ways of climbing the social (and also sexual) ladder.
Joe Lampton is more explicitly this type than Amis’ Jim, although rather more ambiguous. He reaches the top of the ladder but destroys his lover in the process and his guilt at this leaves the ending open; does he end up married to Susan?
I can’t pretend I particularly enjoyed this any more than the Amis, but a bit of social/literary history.
