432. Kingsley Amis - Lucky Jim


After my dismissive comment at no.429 above, I thought I should re- read Amis (I think this is the only book of his I have ever read, many years ago).

To be honest, it was OK but quite dull. Maybe ‘trivia’ (no.429 above) is unfair, but compared to Scott this lacked any substance.

A young man gets a job in a provincial university post war, is borderline competent (and totally uninterested in his subject), is torn between two women, cannot deal with his conventional and pompous boss and the family thereof.

If not trivial, it is pretty lightweight.
