426. Paul Scott - The Jewel In The Crown

Book of the year so fay, and by a long stretch. I have read this before, and we have watched and enjoyed the Granada DVD many times, but the TV drama has to edit the books hugely and there is so much more in the written text than is on the TV.

For instance, a lengthy opening chapter covering the assault on Miss Crane and murder of the teacher she was travelling with. A long chapter narrated by various minor characters in the book and another on Hari’s and his father’s background in England and the reasons his father went there (not unlike Ghandi’s reasons).

The writing is so rich and the characters are given so much time to develop; it is all just a marvel.

So much better than say Tolstoy.
