424. Ivan Turgenev - Fathers And Sons

This is a lot easier than Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky; a quite light social comedy on the surface, although the central figure Bazarov symbolised a tension in late 19th century Russian society between polite society and the more revolutionary trends then growing.

Bazarov seems to be a misguided youngster going literally nowhere, anti everything and pro not a great deal.

The tension may have been important in Russian society at the time, but seems less so today.
