416. Lisa Jewell - The Girls

Tim O'Brien

Another from P (I can’t decide what to read at the moment so am piggy backing on her choices). This was brilliant, I thought.

A (temporarily) single mother and her two young daughters move into a crescent in London which has a large central garden/park, where a lot of the actions takes place. The place is dripping with adolescent sexuality and rivalry.

One of the young girls is found unconscious and apparently sexually violated in the park by her younger sister after a drunken party.

Three generations of a louche and unconventional family, who are the other main characters, have also lived in the crescent.

Superficially a whodunit it is a very well crafted story of adolescent (and not only adolescent) love, sexuality and rivalry and very different too. I would read more.
