401. Joseph Conrad - The Secret Agent

I don’t know when I last read this book, but I thought it was absolutely wonderful this time round.

It is quite beautifully constructed; there are 13 chapters each of which reveals, from very different perspectives, key interactions between the main characters. In this sense, it was like a play, with a number of the characters interacting on different stage sets, and revealing the development of the plot.

I am not sure that a word was wasted in the whole process, and so many plot points and character interactions came to my attention that I had completely missed before (Winnie’s attraction to Ossipon for example, hardly stated in the early chapters, but falling out (of necessity) in the penultimate one).

I don’t think his other books are nearly as good but I should re-read?
