After 'The Portrait of a Lady' (no.17) I thought I would try another James. This is short and slight in comparison, but again very good.
A wealthy father, a plain daughter, and a scoundrel after her money. She falls in love but the father forbids the marriage with the threat of disinheriting her. This creates a problem for the scoundrel, who dumps her.
She never marries and rejects his overtures when he tries again much later in life.
