396. Mary Wesley - The Camomile Lawn

I am not sure if I have ever read this before; although I have seen the TV adaptation many times and the book drags back memories, (particularly of Helena and Hamish on the motorway en route to Max’ funeral).

Found it hard work at first but gradually got into the many characters between whom the narrative jumps. It is amazing that a woman of around 70 starts writing and comes up with this, and I gather other books.

Reminded me slightly of Elizabeth Jane Howard, but the sex, sexuality and relationships in this are far more challenging and interesting. Would read more!
