386. Louise Penny - The Nature Of The Beast

The 10th and most recently published in the series. I liked the beginning more, when it was firmly rooted in Three Pines.

A child discovers a huge ‘supergun/missile launcher’ hidden in the forest near the village. Having announced the discovery, which no one believes, the child is murdered.

That’s the starting plot point. But as the book drifts further away (metaphorically) from the village and into the personalities and motivations of the gun’s creators and those still interested in it, my interest in it waned.

She’s a wonderful writer, but this is an issue for me – move away from Three Pines and into the wider, particularly criminal environment, and her grip, at least on me as a reader, slackens.
