380. John Le Carré - The Night Manager

Bought this, slightly conned by Waterstones’ promotion, as it is being serialised on the TV. Don’t think I have read a Le Carré since no.4, nearly 4 years ago.

Enjoyed this more than I expected, although the ending really is true romance. Le Carré is a quite annoying writer; snobbish, slightly effete, and obsessed with class and the English ‘establishment’.

The plot conclusion is slightly improbable; the villain falls for an elaborate con-trick perpetrated on him by Burr, one of the few good guys left in the spymaster establishment (incongruously played by a pregnant Olivia Coleman (as a woman, obviously) on the TV). But it is quite a good story.
