371. Charity Norman - The New Woman

A library book via P, although probably a ‘woman’s book’, I loved this, beautifully written with a really well constructed plot – would make a great TV drama.

About transgenderism, if that is a word, a woman trapped in a male body who ‘comes out’ in middle age (having been talked out of suicide by a wonderful old lady she encounters on a train). The coming out is at great cost to her family, particularly her wife and son, who, it transpires has an unhappy cross gender encounter in his past.

The wife, initially unsympathetic and feeling betrayed, eventually reconciles herself with her/him, although their future sex life is inexplicit.

Very intelligent about the whole subject, as well.
