I don’t think this is a very good book, although as a quasi-historical novel about a recent bit of Cypriot history that I had pretty well forgotten about, it is quite interesting.
The characters are all extremely wooden and unsubtly drawn and are really ciphers representing – new Greek/Cypriot money, glamorous wife, working class Greek and Turkish Cypriots and the civil war (which is depicted as being like all such wars).
The city of Famagusta obviously really exists and it is quite a shocking story, given all the tourist hotels we have stayed in.
Victoria Hislop is Ian Hislop’s wife and she divides her time apparently between the UK and the Greek islands; must make life difficult for Ian.
