358. Justin Cartwright - Up Against The Night

A wonderful book and change from Zola by a writer I had never heard of. Cartwright writes about modern South Africa from a liberal Africaans perspective.

I found the central character Frank McAllister slightly annoying, in the way that many of Iris Murdoch’s used to annoy me – these characters appear to have limitless unexplained wealth. That aside, McAllister’s perception of South Africa and its recent history and the narrative of his own troubled life is beautifully told.
