I enjoyed this, particularly the element focussing on the refugee crisis, with added topicality today, 10 years after publication.
The relationship between Rebus and Siobhan is now quite mature, although no clearer to them or the reader than it ever was. Both experiment, a little half heartedly, with other ‘dates’ in this book, but these have little chance against the competition.
I found the hooking of Cafferty back in as (inevitably) one of the underlying villains near the end a little forced; Rebus' relationship with him is almost as complex as his with Siobhan.
After a fresh and bold start, it slightly fell away into predictability as the plot threads were pulled (a little artificially) together. Maybe this is a bit grudging; I have read a lot of these.
