351. Ray Celestin - The Axeman's Jazz

Lots of books to read at the moment, as I cashed in my Waterstones voucher which D gave me for my birthday.

This was shortlisted in some ‘Golden Dagger’ type listing: I didn’t fancy it much at the time, probably correctly.

Set in 1919 New Orleans, about an Axeman killer. Three very different people are trying to catch him: conventional cop, although shacked up if not married to black woman; corrupt Mafia like ex-colleague of cop, and mixed race aspirant girl whose friend is the young Louis Armstrong.

So very James Ellroy, with this trilogy in pursuit. But they rarely interact and the book ends with each having a different theory as to the killer and his motives (well the one who is dead did know the truth).

OK but really a bit derivative.
