My Dad had the whole quartet, so another purloined book.
The is the first, and although they are beautifully written, the plot is spare of events until the last 10 or so pages when Justine, the narrators lover, leaves Alexandria for what sounds, anachronistically, like a kibbutz in Israel.
The narrators adopt Justine’s former partner's daughter through his (the narrator’s) ex mistress who dies, possibly in childbirth, I can’t remember.
The books are his memories of Alexandria, written from the Greek island (possibly Corfu where Gerald lived) where he is looking after the girl. The books have an exotic and possibly corrupt appeal.
