Another of P’s library books; I don’t think I have read any Margaret Atwood before. I enjoyed this until the end, when it morphs into a quasi-fairy story.
The basic premise, an alternative world in which couples alternate between ‘normal’ life and prison, and then get muddled up, is clever and funny, but the sinister reality behind this held less appeal, as the characters become increasingly cartoon like and indeed end up as fake Elvis’ and Marilyn’s.
The book was good enough to have gone in a completely different direction, but it ended by imploding on itself.
