The last (I think) of the Brodie books. I found this the least enjoyable. It was somehow too dense and lacked the lightness of touch of the others.
The murder of a prostitute in Leeds in the mid-1970’s and the endemic police corruption then (which are effectively the back drop and story’s chronological starting point) were just done with too much weight, as if possibly she had bolted a different book onto a Brodie one.
The character of Tracy, played I think by Pauline Quirk in the televised version, was good, but rather dominated the plot. Brodie’s role was quiet, as it was to an extent in no.336.
