331. Ian Rankin - The Naming Of The Dead

Odd experience, as I expected this to be a re-read, but it must have sat, unread, on my book case for years.

Siobhan’s parents have never appeared in any previous Rebus that I have read. This is a long and slightly rambling tale set against the backdrop of the G8 summit in Gleneagles a few years ago.

Three apparently unrelated murders are traced to the same location (a Clootie Well, whatever that is near Auchterarder). What links them – well like the Maltese Falcon, two of them are red herrings.

Although I have come back to liking the Rebus books, I did find this a bit of a ponderous re-hashing of the old themes. For instance, Clarke, stepping into Rebus’s shoes, is briefly corrupted by Cafferty, which is interesting, but I am not sure if anything is ever made of this in later books. Maybe it is?
