Either I had forgotten this, or it has sat unread (by me) on the bookcase for 10 years.
It grew on me; couldn’t see the point for about the 1st half (a man’s life told alphabetically in chapter headings as snapshots of 26 different locations at different times in his life). But a plot of sorts, at least about his two loves, although his mother should be added here, begins to emerge, as does a breakdown of sorts after desertion by the first of the two women. I loved the final chapter set in Zanica where the book’s end very cleverly meets Pietro’s beginning.
