Needed something lighter, so reverted to a McBain. He is a very good writer; I had forgotten having read a few many years ago.
Unusually, and apart from an affair between Bert Kling and a black police medic, there was only one plot line but a very clever one. A play about a woman receiving threatening phone calls is being rehearsed; the actress receives threats and is attacked but not seriously hurt; transpires this is a publicity stunt, but she is then attacked and killed for real.
Becomes a variant on the Agatha Christie ‘whodunit?’ in that one of the cast of characters in and around the play must have done it. Watch out for the ambitions of understudies! (Sorry that is a giveaway).
