324. F. Scott Fitzgerald - Tender Is The Night

Tried starting this two years ago in Spain; couldn’t get into it.

A bit of a curate’s egg; some of his writing is excellent; some less so. Plot hard to follow; could have begun with Book 2 which begins the narrative; without having read this, Book 1 is pretty obscure. One of those books that you wonder ‘quite what was the point of this?’

American psychiatrist rescues sexually abused patient and heiress, marries her, has kids etc, she finances his practice but he finds her hard work to live with and descends into alcohol and a rather meaningless affair with a younger American starlet.

She (his wife) meanwhile runs off with a wealthy socialite; he returns to New York and dies in obscurity.
