I found this hard work. If I had wanted to read a biography of George Eliot, I’d have done so. By the end of it, I felt somewhat overwhelmed by Eliot.
I love 'Middlemarch' (no.11) but there are lots of other books in the ocean. Difficult to imagine one book, however long, varied and however much I liked it, inspiring me to write a whole book about it. As a result, it spins off into Lit Crit and biography.
Reminded me a little of no.245; there wasn’t enough to say about his relationship with his owl, so it was padded with a lot of generic data about the bird.
