302. Katherine Webb - The Night Falling

One of Paddy’s cast off’s (like no.300 above). I read too many ‘feminine’ books because they are there available. This was quite good, but was essentially a ‘girlie’ novel.

Set in Italy post World War, it is about an English woman dragged to a very impoverished part (Puglia) of southern Italy by her husband, an architect with a commission from a wealthy local farmer/landowner, although he has also lived in New York.

She falls in love with his nephew, an impoverished farm worker, who gets involved in a rebellion against the land owners, including his uncle.

It’s a mix of a love story and a historical/political drama – quite well done, would make a good film(?) but left me a bit bored and cold.
