3. Graham Greene - The Quiet American

Found this surprisingly hard to get into, being a big fan, but it is excellent.

The narrator is a seedy English journalist in Vietnam in the 50's, when the French were the colonial power. He cohabits with an opportunistic Vietnamese girl, but she falls for the quiet American Pyle, who in turn connives naively with the American powers that be in anti-communist terrorism. With the journalist's connivance, he is murdered by the locals and the journalist thereby gets his girl back.

A poor summary of an excellent book.
