Never read this, or any of her books, before. Huge cast of characters, introduced in short ensemble sketches, so very difficult to remember who is who [Dramatis Personae at start absolutely essential]. But this technique begins to work very effectively as characters are gradually drawn together in what is essentially, a pre World War 2 (but also post World War 1) family saga.
I enjoyed it more and more as I got sucked in and reading speed also increased. Although it seems slightly conventional, it is far better than say Olivia Manning.
Have just started part two, reading quite fast.
