277. Maggie Shipstead - Seating Arrangements

This was very good, especially given that the author is in her early 30’s.

About a wedding party on an island I think off New England, with a huge cast of family friends and guests. The central figure is probably Winn, the patriarchal father of the bride, although Livia the bride’s sister is also prominent and important. Interestingly, the bride and groom are themselves rather minor characters.

Winn is a great portrait of ageing masculinity, embarrassing but never caricatured in his largely unacknowledged failures.

Would definitely read again.
