273. Fred Vargas - Have Mercy On Us All

A Christmas present from Ben. I had read one of hers before, which I didn’t really enjoy, but this was excellent.

A bizarre plot featuring a Breton ex boat captain who is now a town crier in modern day Paris, an apparent plot to spread the plague there with fleas from dead rats (advertised by cryptic bits of mediaeval text and Pepes’ diary as the plague hit London, passed to the town crier to read out) and an eccentric detective, who I see also appears in the earlier book (which I may well now re-read).

The plague theme in fact masks a series of revenge murders committed by (I think) relatives of the plaguist (or monger as she calls him, assuming he is singular – they are not).

The ending is slightly fast and unresolved, but that aside it is a great book.

I have read exactly 100 books in the last year!
