265. Leonardo Padura - Havana Red


This guy is a great writer, although annoying at times. This (he acknowledges) owes a big debt to 'The Maltese Falcon' (no.268 below); it is about looted antiquity, in this case firstly a (fake as it turns out) Matisse, but the real antiquity is a pre-Christian age Buddha looted from China.

I can’t remember a lot of the rest of the plot; a high ranking party official disappeared to Spain many years ago and has returned to Cuba to pick up the stolen Buddha buried in his father’s garden, but is murdered before he can find it.
