255. John Carey - The Unexpected Professor

I found this very dull until about the last two chapters when it suddenly blazed into life. Perhaps Carey’s early life was dull as the book just chronicles childhood, school, university, work as an academic at Oxford in a pretty plodding way. But it suddenly livens up when he became a bit of a celebrity academic/intellectual, and begins to write interesting stuff.

The penultimate chapter, ‘Reviewing’ is great as he lists 20 books I had never heard of that he enjoyed via reviewing them. In particular one about the A40 around the Hoover building which I would love to read (Edward Platt: Leadville), bet that’s out of print now.

A bit of a paradox really.
