Another John Harvey from the library; there are lots. They are well plotted, and one of the interesting aspects is that the narration is split between Resnick and other characters – his girlfriend (until murdered in this initially) and then a ballsy black female cop who is investigating.
The female (as it happens in the two I have read) cops and co-narrators are all at least equal in rank to Resnick which has two effects – it avoids the hierarchical structure you get in Rebus and DI Banks, and also diminishes their character, ie that of the male central figure.
The plot in this one is terrific.
