251. Håkan Nesser - The Return


Read this intermittently; started it before no.249 and no.250 had the libraries imperative.

I enjoy Nesser, but really van Veeteren is the only interesting character, and the other policemen, although they recur, are pretty characterless (I was thinking while reading this that Ed McBain, who I haven’t read for years is the master here; alongside Steve Carella, there are so many other memorable members of the 87th precinct like Bert Kling, a study in male vanity if I have got the right character).

I might have enjoyed ‘The Return’ more if I had read it straight through, although curiously there was a murder in West London recently that has possible echoes with the plot here.
