The last of the Alexandria quartet and also the last book on my list for 2014.
I enjoyed this enormously; it was dense and difficult but beautifully written; he is certainly a great stylist, although one could argue a little overblown.
Hard to describe – a bunch of expatriate (mainly) Brits, intellectuals and aesthetes hanging around in Alexandria some time during the second world war. So some similarities to the Elizabeth Manning, but the characters are totally different – there is an element of the burlesque/picaresque but really they are all big romantics, and even that is not a great word.
Must read the whole trilogy.
