230. Ian Rankin - Exit Music


The last, I think, or intended last, Rebus.

I found this structurally very similar to no.228 initially, with Russian money playing the role of the posh family at 228.

The relationship with Siobhan Clarke seemed uncharacteristically jerky and tense, as if she, Rebus and possibly Rankin himself could see it ending unconsummated.

The ending here is very good – all the motivations and machinations chased down by Rebus exist but are a complete red herring. As for Mr Cafferty, he (probably) dies, despite Rebus’ efforts to save him at the end.
