211. C. P. Snow - Time Of Hope (Strangers And Brothers)

The last Bristol novel.

Never read any Snow before. I found myself enjoying this more as it went on; a between the wars provincial middle (or upper-lower) novel about growing up in the 1920’s, which seems to have included a degree of sexual libertarianism and experimentation. An element of DH Lawrence in C P Snow — not what I would have expected.

The young group are accused of and tried for financial fraud, but it is clear that their morals are as much on trial. Surprisingly, given the small-town environment, they are acquitted.

The writing and characterisation aren’t great, but I would try one of Snow’s other novels. Rather to my surprise.
