Rumania rather passively allows itself to be occupied by the Germans because there is no political will there, only an old and corrupt monarchy, whom the allies are quite happy to support, although indifferently.

The gradual cessation of power to the Nazis, via initially some Rumanian brown shirts or equivalent, and the gradual movement of power away from its old loci (including the embassies of foreign powers, who are just ignored) is very well done. We know the history, but the writing makes it all feel inexorable.

Harriet flees to Athens at the end leaving Guy in Bucharest, and Sasha, the Jewish boy they have half adopted, having been abducted by, we assume, the Germans or their sympathisers.
