190. Ian Rankin - The Black Book

Felt as if I had read this quite recently; could index this document somehow.

Never really been able to make up my mind about Rebus — I remember reading a newspaper review when I think Rankin first appeared making great pal of the pun - games - in Rebus’ name, but I have never really seen that side of it; he seems to me to be a fairly conventional modern fictional detective.

This was a fairly conventional modern detective novel; for once in Rebus, the recurrent villain Big Ger Cafferty is actually caught, but whether he goes to prison I don’t know.

Cafferty at times reminded me of Vautrin in Balzac, but Vautrin is more Mephistopholeon, a tempter of youth and inexperience.
