L used to be a big fan of James Lee Burke (and James Ellroy), but Burkes’ more recent books seem to me have to become very repetitive both in theme and plot.
L loved a couple of the early ones 'Black Cherry Blues’ and ‘In the Electric Mist with the Confederate Dead’, which I made the mistake of lending to someone, never returned.
This is very long, features some new characters (Clete Purcell’s damaged and violent daughter) but it is again thematically and plot-wise a rehearsal of the old themes and lines.
So it is not really that good. He writes very lyrical prose for a thriller writer which lifts it a bit, the philosophising really is old hat.
He needs to move on or stop.
