Extraordinary. Long and difficult (although ultimately very simple) book, simply about human life. Very un-glorified.
The characters are essentially very ordinary working-class peasant farmers whose lives begin (probably) in late 19" century Australia and span (perhaps) to the 1930s.
The central figures are Stan and Amy Parker, who marry, build a house, have children (two, son dead before the end), love each other but with some dislike for Stan from Amy. Stan dies at the end.
Quite a host of other peripheral characters. Many of Irish origin and displaying Joycean roots in their eccentricities.
Compared to Dostoyevsky, this is a huge and serious novel.
