This is the third time I have read this book, and I have never fully understood it!
The narrator, who is both dis-likeable and probably unreliable, has a wife who has been charged with murdering a serial rapist and killer. She is a psychiatrist who has been evaluating him. Her husband thinks she didn’t kill him but becomes convinced that she was having an affair with him.
In the end, it transpires, I think, that he was killed by the daughter of one of his victims, who was pretending to be his wife to gain access and with whom the psychiatrist was possibly having a lesbian relationship. So the psychiatrist was (possibly) manipulated by this victim into acting unknowingly as a fall-person. Possibly, possibly not.
Maureen O’Connell of 'Garnethill' it wasn’t.
