A break perhaps between the Enderby’s. I had read this before, but couldn’t remember a great deal about it. It is quite good, with a feisty heroine.
My problem with it, which gets worse towards the end, is that the bad guy has no real presence in the book until he is caught, but the plot structure really requires that he does. He may make odd appearances earlier, but the book has so many characters in it who interrelate and he is almost a deus-ex-machina when Maureen discovers that he did it. He has no presence earlier in the book, which doesn’t work for me with this kind of plot.
Better than Iris Murdoch though.
