113. E. M. Forster - Where Angels Fear To Tread

Probably enjoyed this less than I expected, although not in a very receptive mood when I read it.

The plot is fairly far fetched; English widow from wealthy middle class family goes to Italy, falls in love with a rough Italian and dies in childbirth. Out of confused social snobbery, the family decide that the child needs to be rescued and various members of the family are despatched to do this.

The baby is stolen and dies as a carriage overturns en route to their escape. Lots of rather intellectualised sentimentality, but really the whole book is pretty parochial in theme and ambition.
